CONTRIBUTING FACTOR TO DIABETES AND HEART DISEASE
Metabolic syndrome is a combination of medical disorders that affect a large number of people in a cluttered fashion. It consists of multiple, interrelated risk factors of metabolic origin that appear to directly promote the development of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). This constellation of metabolic risk factors is also strongly associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus or the risk for this condition.

HOW TO IDENTIFY METABOLIC SYNDROME
Metabolic risk factors consist of atherogenic dyslipidemia, elevated blood pressure, elevated plasma glucose, a prothrombotic state, and a proinflammatory state. A person who presents any three of the five metabolic risk factors is said to have Metabolic Syndrome.

AFFECTING YOUNG AND OLD ALIKE
An estimated 47 million U.S. adults have metabolic syndrome. Experts estimate that at least half of persons over 60 satisfy the criteria for metabolic syndrome. A recent analysis showed that one million 12-19 year old adolescents in the United States have metabolic syndrome. Furthermore, in one study of 3,400 children, 1 in 10 children were found to have metabolic syndrome.

OBESITY A MAJOR FACTOR
Of the adolescents with metabolic syndrome, 73.9% were overweight (BMI ≥ 95th percentile of CDC growth chart) while 25.2 % were at risk of being overweight (BMI 85 -94th percentile).

PROBIOTICS AND THE ELDERLY
Elderly people have a higher susceptibility to degenerative and infectious diseases. Appropriate preventive nutrition strategies, specifically the oral use of probiotics, can be applied to restore and maintain a balanced intestinal microflora exerting protective functions against the above disorders.
